Fitness Classes for Over 60s: How to Find the Right One for You
If you’re over 60 and looking for fitness classes in Edinburgh to help you get fitter, stronger and move more, you’re in the right place.
In this blog, I’ll share how to find the right class for you—and what to look for so you actually enjoy it and stick with it.
What Should You Look for in a Fitness Class?
It can be tricky to find the right class. Some classes may feel way too easy and others totally unrealistic. My advice is to find movement you enjoy with people you like. This way you will be more likely to make it part of your weekly routine.
Here are a few things I always recommend looking for:
1. A welcoming, friendly environment
This is HUGE. The best class for you is one where you feel comfortable walking in the door. No judgement, no pressure—just a group of people getting moving together. At my sessions, I always think the cuppa at the end of the class is really where friendships are formed.
2. A qualified, supportive instructor
You want someone who understands different abilities, offers options, and keeps an eye on technique—without making things complicated or intimidating.
3. Exercises that improve everyday life
Think balance, strength, mobility, and coordination. These are the things that help you stay independent, confident, and injury-free.
4. A pace that suits you
You should feel challenged—but not overwhelmed. A good class will always give you options to go easier or harder.
Jump Edinburgh Classes for Over 60s
I run two friendly, community-based fitness classes for over 60s in Edinburgh:
11am Thursdays Pentland Community Centre, Oxgangs (South Edinburgh) - £4
2.30pm Thursdays North Merchiston Club, Polwarth (Near Fountainbridge) - £3
Both classes are drop in and we have a cuppa and chat afterwards. These classes mix movement to music, with balance and coordination and strengthening exercises. The music and energy make it a really fun and lively class.
Many of my other classes are suitable for Over 60s too. Pilates, LBT (Legs, Bums & Tums), Boxercise, Zumba and even circuits are enjoyed by people of all ages from 20-69! If you want to check with me about the intensity of any class, I am always happy to have a chat to see if it is a good fit for you.
Types of Fitness Classes for Over 60s in Edinburgh
There are some great fitness groups in Edinburgh, from walking football and netball groups, Zumba Gold to walking groups, bowling and Padel. Finding the right class might mean trying a few different options—and that’s completely normal.
Why Community Classes Make Such a Difference
People often sign up because they know movement is so important for their physical health. But the social side is just as important as the exercise itself. It’s easy to keep coming when you know you are going to catch up with such a great bunch of humans!
A Little Note from Me
If you’re based locally and you’ve been thinking about giving something a try, this is your sign.
My classes are designed to be friendly, supportive, and suitable for all levels. You don’t need to be fit to start—you just need to start.
And I promise, you won’t be the only one feeling a bit nervous on day one. You will be made to feel so welcome. I am always happy to have a chat on the phone before you first come along.
Send me a message to find the right class for you. Let’s do this!
